Discover the art of crafting a chawan, or tea bowl that embodies the Japanese aesthetics of wabi and sabi. Through the ceramic technique of carving, you will learn to shape a vessel that is worthy of a ceremony.
+ What we do during the class
In this course you will carve a chawan, or matcha bowl out of a single piece of solid clay. This is a traditional Japanese way of making tea bowls which has been practiced since the samurai times. We will start with forming the outside of the bowl, which includes the very important foot ring before turning to the inside of the bowl. It is a slow, meditative process which clams the mind and invites creativity. Clay is so dynamic and alive, and this technique puts one in touch with clay during one of its most beautiful stages of drying, the “leather-head” stage. When you have finished your carving, you can paint your piece with underglaze colors (engobes). All materials, tools and instructions provided.
Your finished masterpiece will be fully dried under perfect conditions and then fired at 960°C, and then professionally glazed with transparent glaze (and then fired again at 1200°C), so it can be picked up about 2-3 weeks later. Yes, it’s functional – you can drink from it, and it’s dishwasher safe and microwave safe.
