Intensive 5-week pottery course with Josef or Angelika (14+)
Booking Details
Please note: This course will only take place if a minimum of 5 participants is reached. If this number is not met, we reserve the right to cancel the course in due time or offer an alternative date.
+Structure of the course
In the first two weeks, we will look at the totally exciting and mesmerizing process of centering and how you can transform your lump of clay into a work of art. In the third week, we will learn the basics of pottery, from the basic shape to cylinders to bowls or vases. In week four, we will refine the pieces, which will already be leather-hard by then. Handles will be attached and the undersides retouched. We will use the last week for glazing, transforming your masterpieces into fully functional ceramics. Three finished pieces are included in the price. Each additional piece costs an extra €12.00.
+ Start of the next courses:
January 28, March 11 – Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
+Meet your teacher
Theresa completed her apprenticeship in ceramics at the State School for Ceramics in Landshut, where she was trained in a broad range of techniques, including mold making, slab building, and wheel throwing. She learned from internationally renowned woodfire ceramicists during her travels in England and Australia. While her curiosity often draws her toward other art forms, ceramics remain the place she always returns to. Theresa is a passionate, confident, and patient teacher who loves sharing her knowledge and supporting others in discovering their own creative expression. In addition to her ceramic practice, she studied music and movement and has a deep interest in storytelling and object theatre, which continually inspires her to explore new forms of expression.
+ Length of lessons
Included in our 5-week course are weekly, 2,5-hour classes with our fabulous master who will hold your hand every step of the way – literally if necessary – a bag of beautiful, tactile high-fire clay, firing and glazing.
+ No experience necessary
This class is ideal for people with no experience, but also for those who have had a few classes but need a refresher to improve their technique.
+ The course schedule
Day.1- Centering
The first day of this course is all about centering the clay on the wheel, one of the most important and demanding techniques of this craft, as well as showing you proper kneading and other preparation techniques that are the cornerstones of pottery.
Day.2 – Cylinders
In this part we will potter cylinders in different sizes and thickness. Since this basic shape presents the most difficulties, we will dedicate ourselves to mastering it.
Day.3 – Bowls / Cups
Now that the basics have been learned it’s time to get down to business, your first self-throwen utilitarian pottery takes shape, a bowl / cup.
Day.4 – Trimming, handles and finishes
On the last day of clay-working we take care of the foots of the potteries and slip handles onto the leather-hard cups.
Day.5 – Glazing
After the dried pieces have been fired at 960° Celsius you will come back to our studio and learn the basics of glazing. There is great potential in this step, because by adding an individual color your ceramics will become absolutely unique!
+ Can I reschedule?
The course is held in 5 consecutive weeks. Same day, same time. Unfortunately, if you can’t make it to a date, we can’t offer a make-up class. However, you can use the open studio for free for the time you missed and we will be around 🙂
+ Course language
This course is conducted in English and German
+Total course duration – 12,5h
+Course cost
345€ (final price – all included!)
In the case of a rescheduling or cancellation, you will find the corresponding instructions under the first question “How can I reschedule my course?”
Important: Rescheduling requests via email, phone or in person cannot be accepted and are therefore invalid.
On the one hand, there is wheel throwing, where pieces are created on the electric pottery wheel. The resulting objects are characteristically round, symmetrical and thin. On the other hand, there is modeling and shaping clay by hand at the worktable. This includes coiling, pinch technique and slab technique. Here you are not bound to the round base shape created by the wheel and can freely express your creativity.
However, shorter nails – and for pottery wheel courses also a hair tie for longer hair as well as clothes that may get a little dirty – are an advantage. If despite the aprons some clay or glaze gets onto your clothing, don’t worry, both can be easily washed out.
We keep already glazed course pieces in our pickup shelves for 3 months. After that, due to space limitations, they are sorted into monthly boxes where we can no longer guarantee completeness or condition. Every year before Christmas, we donate all remaining pieces that have been with us for more than one year to “Aktion Leben” to bring joy to someone else. :)
Shipping within Austria (1–3 pieces*): €7.17
Shipping to Germany (1–3 pieces*): €17.35
Shipping within the EU (1–3 pieces*): €21.00
An additional packaging & service fee of €9.50 applies per package, as we wrap each piece by hand and personally drop it off at the post office to ensure it arrives safely :)
Medium-sized pieces such as cups, bowls, plates, small vases. Large pieces such as vases, jugs, etc. are calculated as 2 medium-sized pieces.
Glazing in ceramics is an inherently variable process and cannot be fully controlled or exactly reproduced. Even when using the same glaze, clay body, and firing schedule, the final result can vary from piece to piece. Many factors influence the outcome, including placement in the kiln, temperature fluctuations during firing, glaze thickness, the interaction between glaze and clay, as well as the general kiln atmosphere. These variables are a natural part of working with handmade ceramics.
Due to this unpredictability, the appearance of the glaze is not considered a defect. For this reason, we do not offer refunds, reimbursements, or remakes based on glaze results or personal preference.
