+ What you will do
In this class, you will carve a chawan, a traditional Japanese matcha bowl, from a single block of firm clay. This time-honored technique has been practiced since the era of the samurai and offers a deeply meditative and mindful approach to ceramics.
We begin by shaping the exterior of the bowl, carefully crafting its form and attaching the all-important foot ring. Then, we move to the interior, gradually hollowing out the center. The process is slow and intentional, designed to quiet the mind and encourage creativity. Clay, in its dynamic and living nature, becomes especially expressive during the ‘leather-hard’ phase — a perfect moment to connect with the material. Once your form is complete, you’ll add color and character using special underglaze pigments known as engobes.
As part of the experience, we’ll also serve matcha to enrich the atmosphere.
+ No experience needed
This workshop is perfect for beginners.

After you've finished working on your piece, we ensure the right conditions for it to properly dry - after one or two days, we turn it upside down and inscribe your initials on it. Depending on the thickness of your creation, it takes 3-10 days for it to fully dry. Once dried, we fire it at 960 degrees Celsius - reaching the right temperature and cooling down takes about 28 hours. After the first "raw" firing, we dip your piece in transparent glaze and put it back into the kiln - this time to fire it at 1220 degrees Celsius. After another 36 hours, your piece is beautiful, glossy, very durable, and fully functional. You can now use it every day, put it in the dishwasher, and be proud of yourself :) In 1-2 weeks after your class, we will let you know that your piece is ready for pickup!
On the one hand, there is wheel throwing, where pieces are created on an electric pottery wheel. The objects created this way are characteristically round, symmetrical, and thin. On the other hand, there is hand-building and shaping the clay by hand at the worktable. This includes coil building, pinch technique, and slab building. Here, you are not bound to the round base shape created by a wheel and can let your creativity run free.
However, shorter nails – as well as clothing that can get a little dirty – are an advantage. If some clay or glaze gets on your clothes despite the aprons, don’t worry, both can easily be washed out.
If you would like to consume alcohol, you can purchase one of our 0.7 l "Wine & Clay" bottles for €25.00 or a 0.2 l bottle for €5.20 on-site.
We keep already glazed course pieces on our pickup shelves for 3 months. After that, due to space limitations, they are sorted into monthly boxes in which we can no longer guarantee the completeness or condition of the pieces. Every year before Christmas, we donate all remaining pieces that have stayed with us for more than a year to "Aktion Leben" to bring joy to someone else. :)

Glazing in ceramics is inherently a variable process and cannot be fully controlled or exactly reproduced. Even when using the same glaze, the same clay, and the same firing schedule, the final result can vary from piece to piece. Many factors influence the outcome, including placement in the kiln, temperature fluctuations during firing, glaze thickness, the interaction between glaze and clay, as well as the overall kiln atmosphere. These variables are a natural part of working with handmade ceramics.
Due to this unpredictability, the appearance of the glaze is not considered a defect. For this reason, we do not offer refunds, reimbursements, or remakes based on glaze results or personal preferences.
