9-week pottery course (16+)
Booking Details
In our intensive course, we will first shed light on the basics of the potter’s wheel and then focus on how to properly finish the pieces you have thrown. Regardless of whether you have never worked on the wheel before or already have experience, we are happy to address individual questions and ideas outside of the course plan.
In this course, great emphasis is placed on centering and pulling up the clay. These two steps are among the most difficult on the wheel and are crucial for further processing.
An intensive course is also a good idea if you want to (finally) pimp up your dishes!
+ Course program
In the first two weeks, we will focus on the process of centering and how you can transform your lump of clay into a work of art. In the third week, we will learn the basics of pottery, from the basic form of the cylinder to a finished cup. In week four, the cups, which are already leather hard, will be refined. Handles will be attached and the undersides trimmed. In week 5, we will throw cylinders again and form bowls out of it. In week 6, we will refine the remaining pieces. In week 7 we will form vases by using what we have learned. The following 8th week, we will trim the vases. We will use the last week to glaze your pieces and turn them into fully functional ceramics.
9 finished pieces are included in the price.
+When?
Nine consecutive Tuesdays from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
+Length of sessions
Our 9-week course includes weekly, three-hour lessons with our experienced instructor Josef, who will hold your hand every step of the way – literally if necessary. The whole thing is repeated 9 times.
+ The course plan
You can see the start date of the courses in our calendar. Click on the corresponding date and you will see a schedule for the entire course.
Day 1 – Centering
The first day of this course is all about centering the clay on the potter’s wheel, one of the most important and challenging techniques in this craft. We will also show you how to knead and prepare the clay properly, which are the cornerstones of pottery.
Day 2 – Making cylinders
After successfully centering our clay, we will devote ourselves to designing a cylinder. This is another foundation for all future steps that will follow.
Day 3 – forming cups
Now that the basics have been learned, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty: Designing. Your first self-made utility ceramic is taking shape.
Day 4 – Bottom, handles and finishing
In this session, we will take care of the bottoms of the pieces and attach handles on the leather hard cups.
Day 5 – Forming bowls
On this day, we will return to the basics, focusing on creating your first bowls.
Day 6 – Bottoms, turning and finishing
In this session, we will finish your thrown bowls by adding a foot and giving the underside a final clean.
Day 7 – Vase forming
On this day, we will make our own vases. We will focus on the basics again and then devote ourselves to precise shaping.
Day 8 – Trimming and finishing
Here we will take your thrown vases and take care of the underside and finish the pieces.
Day 9 – GlazingAfter all your dried pieces have been fired at 960°C, you come back to us in the studio and we show you the technique of glazing. This step has great potential, because the individual colouring makes your ceramics absolutely unique.

In the case of a rescheduling or cancellation, you will find the corresponding instructions under the first question “How can I reschedule my course?”
Important: Rescheduling requests via email, phone or in person cannot be accepted and are therefore invalid.
On the one hand, there is wheel throwing, where pieces are created on the electric pottery wheel. The resulting objects are characteristically round, symmetrical and thin. On the other hand, there is modeling and shaping clay by hand at the worktable. This includes coiling, pinch technique and slab technique. Here you are not bound to the round base shape created by the wheel and can freely express your creativity.
However, shorter nails – and for pottery wheel courses also a hair tie for longer hair as well as clothes that may get a little dirty – are an advantage. If despite the aprons some clay or glaze gets onto your clothing, don’t worry, both can be easily washed out.
We keep already glazed course pieces in our pickup shelves for 3 months. After that, due to space limitations, they are sorted into monthly boxes where we can no longer guarantee completeness or condition. Every year before Christmas, we donate all remaining pieces that have been with us for more than one year to “Aktion Leben” to bring joy to someone else. :)
