Hosted by Fresh Ceramics and led by Gábor Somoskői (Kezemura)
Immerse yourself in an in-depth exploration of chawan (tea bowl) form with ceramic artist Gábor Somoskői of Kezemura. This full-day advanced chawan workshop is designed for experienced ceramicists who want to deepen their understanding of proportion, surface, and purposeful making. When creating objects, Gábor places strong emphasis on experimentation, material choice, and attention to small details. His work often explores the contrast between natural, rounded, organic forms and structured, angular, crystal-like surfaces. He will bring his favourite techniques and tools for chawan making, which can be useful when creating other items as well.
Over the course of the day, you will work closely with Gábor on the wheel and in refinement, while also gaining insight into his creative approach and way of working. The structure allows time for focused practice, reflection, and discussion.
Date and time
22nd of February, starting at 10:00

Fresh Ceramics – Neubau Studio
Workshop structure:
Part 1 – Wheel throwing: chawan
We begin with a 2.5-hour hands-on session focused on throwing chawan on the wheel. Gábor will share his approach to shaping form through demonstration and guided individual work, with an emphasis on sensitivity to material and proportion.
Lecture (open to a wider audience)
Mid-day, Gábor will give a lecture open to the public. During this time, the freshly thrown chawans are intentionally left to firm up, preparing them for refinement.
Part 2 – Refinement, carving, and finishing
After the lecture, the workshop continues with a second hands-on session dedicated to retouching, carving, and finishing, with individual feedback throughout (2-2,5 hours).
For whom
This workshop is intended for participants with prior wheel-throwing experience. Not suitable for beginners.
