Discover the art of making a chawan or tea bowl that embodies the Japanese aesthetics of wabi and sabi. Through the ceramic technique of carving, you will learn how to shape a vessel worthy of a tea ceremony.
+ What you will make
In this class, you will carve a chawan or matcha bowl out of a single piece of firm clay. This is a traditional Japanese way of making tea bowls, practised since the time of the samurai. We will start by forming the outside of the bowl, which includes attaching a very important foot ring, before turning to the inside of the bowl. It is a slow, meditative process that quiets the mind and fosters creativity. Clay is so dynamic and alive, and this technique puts you in touch with clay during one of its most beautiful drying phases, the ‘leather head’ phase. After shaping, you can paint your matcha bowl with special underglaze colours (engobes).
Matcha is served. All materials, tools and instructions are provided. Your finished masterpiece will be fully dried and then fired at 960°C, and then professionally glazed with transparent glaze (to be fired again at 1200°C) so that it can be picked up 2-3 weeks later. Yes, it is functional – you can drink from it and it is dishwasher and microwave safe.
