+Intensive course – ceramics summer camp in Neubau
+ What you will do
In this course you will perfect your very own ceramic creations under the guidance of our experienced ceramists. You will start with pottery on the wheel, as we know that this is the most appealing part for many people. We will then continue with various hand modeling techniques, which you will also get to know. We will also dive into the world of clay recycling and take a look at what “slip” actually is and what we need it for. We will also focus on shape and texture to create the pieces of your imagination, be it a vase, a mug or something that only you know! Each child will use about 25 kilos of clay during the week and the masterpieces will be fired and glazed!
+ No experience required!
This course is ideal for all ceramic beginners aged 9 to 13.
Children from the age of 8 can participate accompanied by their parents. It is necessary to book a place for both the parent and the child. Please note that no more than two children under the age of 10 can participate per adult.
+ Course program
1st day of the week:
8:00 to 9:00 – Easy Morning
During this time, you can arrive at the studio at your own pace. We will wait until everyone is here and then start the course program together at 9:00.
9:00 am to 9:30 – “Circle time”
Here we get to know each other and discuss what is on the agenda for the day and what we will be working on in more detail.
9:30 to 11:30 – Centering the sound
It’s all about centering the clay on the wheel, one of the most important and challenging steps of this craft. We will also show you how to knead the clay correctly and other preparation techniques that lay the foundations of pottery. No pieces are created here as it is purely about the practice process, as this is the most important part of learning to center. However, you will learn how to recycle the clay.
11.30 to 12:00 – Lunch break
During this time you can take a break, relax and eat the food you have brought with you to the studio.
12:00 to 13:30 – Behind the scenes #1 brainstorming
Here we will focus entirely on your imagination and try to get your ideas down on paper. Here you will also sketch, possibly cut out templates and make a first clay prototype to give your modeled sculpture its first shape.
13:30 to 15:00 – Hand modeling
Here we will look at the thumb technique. This is one of the many modeling techniques you will learn in this week’s course. You will try out this method on a small piece and when it is finished, you will paint it with special underglaze colors, which are also called engobes. We will then fire it twice and glaze it transparently so that it is fully functional.
15:00 to 17:00 – Open Studio
At the end of the day, you can continue working independently on your pottery project, exchange ideas with the other participants, and then help with cleaning up until you are picked up or make your way home on your own.
2nd day of the week:
8:00 to 9:00 – Easy Morning
During this time, you can arrive at the studio at your own pace. We will wait until everyone is here and then start the course program together at 9:00.
9:00 to 9:30 – “Circle time” and further development of ideas
Here we discuss again what is on the agenda for the current day. At the same time, you develop your ideas further.
9:30 to 11:30 – Pottery cylinders
In this part, cylinders of different sizes and thicknesses are potted. As this basic shape can often present difficulties, you will devote yourself to mastering it. Again, you won’t have any finished pieces in your hands yet, but after this day you will already have mastered the basics to create your first pieces on the potter’s wheel the next day.
11.30 to 12:00 – Lunch break
During this time you can take a break, relax and eat the food you have brought with you in our studio.
12:00 to 12:45 – Behind the scenes #2 Personalized pottery stamp
You’ll make your own personal stamp, which you can then use to sign your pieces.
12:45 to 15:00 – Hand modeling
Here we look at the build-up technique. This is another modeling technique. You will use this method to make a new small piece, then paint it again and then start your weekly project, which you will work on for the rest of the week.
15:00 to 17:00 – Open Studio
At the end of the day, you can continue working independently on your pottery project, exchange ideas with the other participants, and then help with cleaning up until you are picked up or make your way home on your own.
3rd day of the week:
8:00 to 9:00 – Easy Morning
During this time, you can arrive at the studio at your own pace. We will wait until everyone is here and then start the course program together at 9:00.
9:00 to 9:30 – “Circle Time” and further development of ideas.
Here we discuss what we have planned for the day. At the same time, you develop your ideas further.
9:30 to 11:30 – Mug making
In this section you will apply the basics you have learned from the first two days at the potter’s wheel and create your first handmade mugs, which we will fire and glaze transparently at the end of the course to make them completely functional.
11.30 to 12:00 – Lunch break
During this time you can take a break, relax and eat the food you have brought with you in our studio.
12:00 to 12:45 – Behind the scenes #3 Slurry
We will make “slip” together and look at why it is one of the most important basics of this craft. You will realize that you will need it again and again this week.
12:45 to 15:00 – Hand modeling
Today it’s the turn of the plate technique, another hand modeling technique that you will learn. You will practice this method again by making a small piece with it, which you will also paint. Then you can get back to your sculpture. You now have a total of three small hand-modeled pieces of your own.
15:00 to 17:00 – Open Studio
At the end of the day, you can continue working independently on your pottery project, exchange ideas with the other participants, and then help with cleaning up until you are picked up or make your way home on your own.

11.30 to 12:00 – Lunch break
During this time you can take a break, relax and eat the food you have brought with you in our studio.
12:00 to 13:30 – Behind the scenes #4 “Carving” method
Here you take your pieces from the previous day, which you made using the slab technique, to try out the carving method. Here we will also use the self-made slip again.
13:30 to 15:00 – Hand modeling
On this day, you will finalize your hand-modelled sculpture and put the finishing touches to it.
15:00 to 17:00 – Open Studio
At the end of the day, you can continue working independently on your pottery project, exchange ideas with the other participants, and then help with cleaning up until you are picked up or make your way home on your own.

Here we discuss what’s coming up for the last day and what’s still missing to finalize all your pieces.
9:30 to 11:30 – Turning off your work
In this part, you will learn about turning. Here you will attach the foot and handle to your pieces and also retouch them if necessary. We will also use “slip” again, as we already know that it is essential for this step.

In the last section, you can paint your pieces that you have made on the potter’s wheel over the week, as well as your weekly project with the already known underglaze. If there is still time left, we will finish with “play with clay”. Here you can let off steam with the clay. We will then recycle everything together.
15:00 to 17:00 – Open Studio
At the end of the day, you can continue working independently on your pottery project, exchange ideas with the other participants, and then help with cleaning up until you are picked up or make your way home on your own.
+ How many pieces will I have in my hand at the end?
2 – 4 potted pieces on the wheel
3 small hand-modeled pieces
1 large modeled piece (weekly project).
All are fired at 960 degrees, glazed by you and then fired again at 1200 degrees to make them durable, functional and food safe. Each child will use about 25 kilos of clay during the week and the masterpieces will be fired and glazed!
+ What about drop-off and pick-up times?
The course always takes place from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
From 8:00 to 9:00 you can bring your child to our studio. Between 9:00 and 15:00 the main educational program takes place (it is very important that you arrive on time and stay until the end) and between 15:00 and 17:00 the children work independently on their projects (you can pick up your child at any time between these two hours if you wish).
